Finnish-Polish environmental cooperation - project

Development of Environmental Operation Between Tampere Region and Polish Coastal Regions

The aim of the project is to promote cooperation between the Tampere region, Finland, and the Pomeranian and Western Pomeranian regions in Poland in the sectors of regional solid waste management, wastewater treatment and water management. The project was financed by the Council of Tampere Region during 2003-2004.

The core of the project is a survey on environmental development needs in Northern Poland based on interviews with Polish local authorities carried out by Finnish students in spring 2003. Results of the survey are represented in the final report, which can be found here: final report

Most potential project opportunities were presented by Polish partners in an Environmental Contact Forum in Gdansk on 14–15 May 2003. 60 representatives of the Finnish and Polish environment sector participated in the two-day event in Gdansk. The Baltic Institute of Finland organized the Contact Forum together with the province of Pomerania.

One result of the project is an export group of four Finnish companies that was created in Tampere during autumn 2003. It is a joint project of the Baltic Institute of Finland and Exportum Ltd. The aim of the project is to promote and export Finnish technologies, products and expertise to Northern Poland.

During the project many Finnish-Polish contacts were created and cooperation opportunities discussed. The Baltic Institute of Finland is actively initiating environmental cooperation projects together with Finnish and Polish partners.
