18 Days that Shook the World - Solidarity 1980

A Photography Exhibition

A photography exhibition 18 Days that Shook the World – Solidarity 1980 was organized by BIF and the Embassy of Poland in Tampere in November 2001. The exhibition was prepared by Polish Karta Center whose patron is the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In connection with the exhibition, Ambassador Stanislaw Stebelski visited BIF.

BSSSC Working Group on the Northern Dimension

The Baltic Institute of Finland works as a secretariat of the BSSSC Working Group on the Northern Dimension. The working group is chaired by Mr. Aimo Lempinen, executive director of Uusimaa Regional Council. The objectives of the Group are: to coordinate the BSSSC activities relating to the Northern Dimension; to follow and to report to the BSSSC Board on the development of the Northern Dimension; and to initiate subregional projects supporting the Northern Dimension.

 

 

Political Situation in Lithuania after the Parliamentary Elections 2000

Lithuanian Ambassador to Finland, Mr. Neris Germanas lectured on Political Situation in Lithuania after the Parliamentary Elections 2000. The presentation was held in November 2000 at the Baltic Institute of Finland.

 

Discussion Groups on the Baltic Sea Region's Environmental Issues

In close cooperation with the Department of Regional Studies and Environmental Policy of the University of Tampere, and Viatek Tampere Ltd., the Baltic Institute of Finland has established a discussion group for organizations dealing with the Baltic Sea region's environmental issues. Total number of organizations involved in the group exceeds 20 and is still growing.

The aim of the group is to function as the environmental information forum for the Baltic Sea region. The group also aims to become a body that itself plans and implements projects of environmental nature in the Baltic Sea area.

 

The Baltic Sea Region in a Changing Europe - a Public Lecture Series

A series of five lectures under the common title: The Baltic Sea Region in a Changing Europe was hosted by the Baltic Institute of Finland. The lectures were intended for general public, and were held by five distinguished Finnish experts in environment, politics, economics and history. The lectures took place between January 27 and February 17, 1999.

 

The Baltic Institute of Finland at the Special Meeting of the European Council

BIF had a unique opportunity to participate in the Special Meeting of the European Council during Finland's presidency of the Union. BIF presented Baltic Sea cooperation in the special meeting, Tampere, Oct. 15-16, 1999, together with some of the major Baltic Sea Region organizations. Some 1200 accredited representatives of the world media had an opportunity to familiarize themselves with Baltic Sea cooperation issues.

 

U.S. - Baltic Sea Region Relations - Trade, Investment, and Regional Development: Advancing the Northern European Initiative

Director of BIF Mr. Esa Kokkonen participated in a special group program "U.S. - Baltic Sea Region Relations -- Trade, Investment, and Regional Development: Advancing the Northern European Initiative". The program took place in the United States during March 1 to 17, 1999, and it was sponsored by the United States Information Agency. There were participants from each country around the Baltic Sea in the program.

 

Telewise Foundation

The Baltic Institute is one of the founding fathers of the Telewise foundation, which through modern telecommunications technology facilitates cooperation among neighboring countries in the fields of education, commerce and technology.
